CATHERINE SHUMAN MILLER
The structure of the grid allows exploration of space and movement. Through overlapping and layering lines and shapes emerges a type of organic geometry. My approach to working is playful and rhythmic. Whether the process is printmaking, drawing, or painting, the grid holds the formal structure and provides a point of departure through which I can bend, twist, or simply travel. I observe and am inspired by the rhythm and movement found in nature, as well as in the man-made environment. In my work I create movement and space through layering, and variations in the tone, color, line, and texture.
